Just in time for the weekend!  With the cooler air temps and slightly shorter days  the water temp has gone down and the fishing has  taken off.  I was on the NF CDA the other morning and the water temp was 58 degrees.  I saw stronger hatches and more risers.  I've been re-reading Neele Streeks, "Small Fly Adventures in the West, Angling for Larger Trout" and decided to go small with my flies.  In the morning on the NF CDA I've been using size #16-18 flies. Kicking Klinks, Greased Lightnings, Humpys, Royal Wullfs, PMX, and Grumpy Frumpys have done very well for me.  Most of my success has been in the seams along long pools and around island.  Riffles have also been producing as well.  If your interested in fishing smaller flies stop by the shop.

North Fork of the Coeur d Alene

The water is getting a little skinny in the upper reaches and is concentrating the fish and making it easier to cross the river and fish some islands. Overall the river is fishing well but we do need some rain to get the flows up.  Riffles have been doing well as have the deeper runs.  With the water this low you need to be a little stealthier.

St. Joe River, Avery

Report have been very positive from my customers fishing the St. Joe.  I'll be fishing it next week.  There have been some large caddis hatches coming off in the evening in the upper reach above Avery.  During the day hopper in tan and gray, size #10-12 have done well.  This is probably one of the best times of the year to fish The Joe and it will only get better as September approaches.

Clark Fork, St Regis MT

I floated the Forest Grove section to Superior with my daughter and her boyfriend during the eclipse on Monday.  The forested upper section fished really well in the morning.  I tied on a #8 Krueger Cicada (I know we don't have cicadas here!) to my daughter line and 3 casts later we had a nice rainbow in the net.  So we each tied one on and got a few more.  Hoppers and PMX's were also working well.  The Riffles before and after some of the long flat water fished well.  I usually push through some of the long flat water but we were seeing the occasional risers in the middle of the river so we targeted them.  Steve, my outfitter at Clark Fork Trout has been having good success on small flies in the AM and hoppers during the day on the St. Regis to 14 Mile Bridge section.  I have some days open in September if you are interested in a guided trip.

Lets start with the weather because that is the biggest influence on our fishing right now.  I don't have to tell you it has been hot and dry.  Spokane is about to break the record for most consecutive days at 90 degrees or above and consecutive days without significant rain fall.  This has brought the rivers temperature up, hatches down and limited our time to fish to either the early morning or early evening.  But all that is about to change next week.  A strong low pressure is moving in and pushing this stagnant high out of here.  Starting Sunday, temps will drop into the 80's and then high 70's with possible unsettled weather for the foreseeable future.  Lows at night will be in the 50's.  Yesterday my car showed 49 degrees along the Beaver River by the NF of the CDA.  This new weather pattern will bring the water temps down, and this will make the fish more active.

North Fork of the Coeur d Alene River

I've been fishing the NF CDA the last few mornings, usually 6:00 - 8:30 AM.  I'd would like to stay until 10:00, but someone has to open the shop.  Fishing has been good for me this time of day.  It seems that when the sun hit a section of water the fish become real active.  I've had good success on small attractors, Klinkhammers and PMD's (#16-18). Try working the gravel bars, islands, tight to the shore and riffles.  At this time of day I did find some fish in the shallows.  If you can only fish mid day tie on some hoppers or ants.  I've also had good reports on the evening caddis hatch.  The lower, fuller and slower water around the Steamboat section has done well.  The dog days of summer may be coming to an end.

St. Joe River

Reports on The Joe is that it is fishing good right now, in the high river and just below Avery.  Like the NF CDA there are a lot of rafters after 11:00 AM below Avery. The early AM and later PM time slots is when the best fishing will occur.  Hoppers are out in force, not just on The Joe but everywhere.  We are still seeing some Yellow Sallies.  The upper canyon of The Joe is narrower so the water does stay cooler.

Clark Fork, St Regis MT

It has been a little hotter on the other side of the Bitterroot Mountains, but also cooler at night.  This has kept the water temps in a manageble level.  If you are floating the morning and evenings will be best.  Reports from my guide outfitter, Clark Fork Trout, is that the hopper action has picked up over the last week.  Gray, tan and purple have been bringing them up.  If you fish midday Try a hopper dropper.  The dropper should be at least 3' or more to get the fly down to the zone.  Of the 3 rivers reported the Clark will probably have the most positive impact when the weather shifts late this weekend.  If you are interested  in a guided trip down the Clark Fork give me a call at the shop,

Well summer is peaking. Traditionally this is the hottest part of summer and this year does not disappoint. It has been well over a month since we had any rain.  The flows and most rivers are low and the temps are up.  Fishing early will be your best bet for landing some trout.  Hoppers in size 12 in tan or gray should work well.  As the season progresses the hoppers will grow.  Black and cinnamon ants have also been working well.  Right at dusk you will probably find a good caddis hatch going.  If you are a late riser the evening caddis hatch is your best bet.

While the golden stones, drake, PMD hatches have disappeared they have been replaced by the bikini, rubber beer hatch.  Right now this is extending as far up as Big Hanks Campground.  But this is public water so it is meant for everyone.  With summer the river has become fuller with other river users. But if you are on the water at 6:00 AM you won't have a problem.  You may want to do a little hiking up some of the tributaries along the the CDA, you might find some big boys hiding in those pools.  Besides hoppers and ants, SF Chernobyl Ants, hairy foam and PMX's.

St Joe River

If you walked into the shop today I would tell you to fish, The Joe.  The elevation of the river, narrower canyons, shade and runoff from a higher elevation has kept this river fishing well.  Drive time is longer, but above Avery you won't see as much of the bikini, rubber, beer hatch.  So it is worth the drive.  Flows are still at a good level, but a bit thinner the higher you head up river.  Just like the NF CDA the early mornings and evening are going to be your most productive time. Try some foam with a trailing PMD or Para Adams in the morning, hopper and ants as the day progresses and caddis at twilight.

The Clark Fork, St. Regis Montana

Flows  3,000 CFS  Water Temps 64-68 degrees.  At the St. Regis River confluence it was 62 degrees



I've floated the the Clark Fork 4 times over the last 10 days on stretches from Superior down to 14 mile bridge.  The water is getting clearer, but temps are rising during the day as much as 4 degrees between 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM  The best fishing has been early morning right at dawn.  The fishing  stayed steady until 9:30 then it began to taper off.  The 2 stretches that fished best were St. Regis to 14 mile bridge or Sloway to St. Regis.  The 14 mile bridge float is, as it says 14 miles.  So you are on it for the entire day.  Sloway to St Regis is only about 6 miles.  You could put on at 6:00 and be off by 11:00.  The St. Regis water temp. is cooler.  At the confluence you will probably find fish bunched up in that area.  As the flows continue to go down the river is revealing more structure.  Hit those gravel bars, rocky shores and riffles hard and push through the lake regions.

We have had a busy few days with river trips, daughters visiting and people in the shop. I apologize for the delay of the reports.  Well, summer is in full force.  It has not rained since I don't know when.  The flows on all the rivers has slowed down and the water temps are rising.  The early morning and late, late afternoon to evening are your best bets to landing some fish.  Caddis are coming off in the evenings on all 3 rivers.  Stick to the deeper runs and shade.  Trout may also be found hiding in the riffles.  One thing I have noticed is that cutthroat tend to make little sips when they take your fly.  I have seen more misses because of excess slack in the line.  Keep the lines tight and mend and you will land more fish.  Slack is your enemy!

I floated the St. Regis to 14 Bridge section on Friday.  We put on at 7:30 AM and it was 55 degrees but that heated up quickly to 80 by noon.  We aren't seeing large, strong hatches so trying to match the hatch is not a problem.  Throwing double rig dries with a large Stimmie up front and a smaller stimmie or ant worked well.  Hopper droppers with a Prince, Copper John or a Pats Rubber Leg trailing was working. 12-4 PMX, SF Chernobyls, foam worked well.  Small hoppers has also been bringing them up.  Be creative.  I'll be guiding the river the next 3 days.  Feel free to call the shop and book a trip on the forth day!

I have had a lot of positive reports on the St. Joe the past 10 days.  All were fishing above Avery.  In various areas the canyon can get a little narrow and shadowy.  Focus on these areas and the deeper runs during the day. Hoppers, ant and foam worked mid morning to afternoon  The evening caddis hatch is going to be your best bet for solid fishing.  If it get a little too dark to see your flies try swing an ovulating or soft hackle caddis.  If you are looking to wade fish and trying to decide between the NF CDA and The Joe, go to the Joe.  The drive is longer but it is fishing better right now.

North Fork of the Coeur d Alene

As noted above if you are looking to wade fish during the day I'd head to The Joe over the NF CDA right now.  The flow is low and water temperature are going up.  You also have to contend with he Beer/Bikini/Tube hatch.  You may encounter this hatch except in the upper reaches.  But all this being said there is a very good caddis hatch coming off in the evening.  With it staying light until until 9:30 this is a great alternative to the hot days.

The rivers are hitting their stride now!  Waters levels have come down, temps are at good levels and our summer weather has arrived.  The Clark Fork is still high at 12,800.  It has gone from a dirty brown to a clear green.  We will start guiding in 2 weeks.  If you are interested in a trip give us a call.  

The NF of the Coeur d Alene rivers levels have been creeping down.  This can be good news and bad news.  As the levels come down the water temps go up.  This is also good news because  the fish will start to concentrate in the deeps pools and runs.  We are still seeing good hatches coming off daily.  You can expect to see golden stones, PMD's (though tapering off) green drakes, yellow sallies and caddis.  While not a hatch, try Throwing some ant and beetle patterns as well.  My suggestion is to ignore the lower river from mile post 16.  Below mile 16 the giant bikini, beer and rubber tube hatch is going off daily.  Head up river instead.  You have over 30 miles to explore and fish.

Reports from the St. Joe point toward some very good fishing.  Like the NF CDA the best fishing can be found above Avery away from the giant bikini, beer and rubber tube hatch.  Again you have mile and miles of river above Avery to explore and probably have to yourself to fish.  Moon Pass and the pass from St. Regis are now open.  The hatches on The Joe are basically the same as the NF CDA, but about 2 weeks behind.  The water level is down to a manageable  level.  But do be cautious.  I also had a report from a camper on the NF of the Joe that it was fishing well.  Besides matching the hatch try some foam and some "classic" attractor patterns like Trudes and Royal Wulffs.

We spent Sunday and Monday up at the Kit Price campground on the North Fork of the CDA fishing and generally have a good time. The conditions all along the river are ideal right now.  Hatches have been coming off fairly regularly throughout the day.  The salmon flies have faded, but golden stones,  yellow sallies, green and brown drakes, pmds and caddis were strong throughout the day.  The heat of the day slowed things down in the afternoon, but picked back up in the early evening.  I was seeing more caddis than the week before.  There were a lot of caddis cases on the rocks.  My daughter had a lot of luck swinging an "ovulating caddis".  Caddis will probably be one of the main hatches for the forseeable future.  I tried 6 of our shops golden stone patterns throughout the 2 days.  All the flies brought fish to the net.  I had a success rate of 4-1 if the fly was presented half sunk vs flies floating high on the water. A half submerged, struggling or dead stone fly is a much easier target for the cutts.   Foam attractor patterns such as "Evans Baby Foam" and "South Fork Chernobyls" in #12 have done well also.  Fishing the deeper pools and seam lines next o the fast water produced good size fish.  It looks like we are going to have some great weather for the next 10 days.  The fishing should be great!  Get out and enjoy it.

I spent last Thursday, Sunday and Monday fishing the NF of the Coeur d Alene. It was some of the best fishing I have encountered in the last 2 year on the NF CDA.  The river levels are perfect, water temps are optimal and we have great weather.  If your local rivers are still in runoff ( Montana) head this way you will not be disappointed. We camped at Kit Price on Sunday and Monday, so we experienced the entire day and evening of hatches. PMDs were coming off in the morning, followed by Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, Drakes then PMDs. We saw caddis, but not in large numbers.  Low riding Golden Stone patterns worked well as did PMDs and large Klinkhammer patterns. In the early morning and between hatches I tied on some large ant patterns and they brought cutts up from the depth.  The river fished well throughout the entire day tapering off at dusk.  If you have been waiting for the flows to come down, now is the time to get out there.

While not at optimal flows The Joe is fishing very well right now.  The river is uncrowned so this should be a great time to go.  Moon Pass from Wallace to Avery is now open.  The pass from St. Regis is still closed.  If you hear that it is open let me know.  Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, PMDs, & Drakes are all coming off now. Ants are also working.

Well it looks like the fly fishing season is starting to get into swing.  The NF Coeur d Alene and The St. Joe are fishing very well right now. The ingredients have come together for some great dry fly action.  The water temperature as of this morning on the NF CDA was 52 degrees. Flows are on the Jt. Joe while not optimize are very fishable. The NF CDA are perfect. We are seeing some strong and diversive hatches throughout the day.  Our weather for fishing should also help. We are going to be cooling down with temps in the high 60's to mid 40's at night for the next 10 days. Mix this all together and you should have a stellar day on the water. 

On both the St. Joe and NF CDA you'll encounter similar hatches throughout the day, Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, PMD, Brown Drakes and Ants. The St. Joe still has some salmon flies and the NF CDA is starting to see caddis!  I love caddis! We have a large selection of caddis dries, emergers and nymph patterns.

I was on the water this morning at 6:00 AM this morning.  There were no hatches while I was there but I did land 6 cutts on PMX's size 12-16.  Each one came out of the depths to take that dry fly.  They must of thought "mmm breakfast". The moral is, even if There are no hatches coming off, tie on something that looks inticing and see what happens. PMX's, Grumpy Frumpy, Chernobyls, Stimmies or Fat Alberts.

The Clark Fork is flowing at 23,000 CFS ( down from 33,000 on 6/2) and St. Regis is at 1,460. Give it another 2 weeks and both should be hitting their stride.

The NF of the CDA is flowing at 671 CFS in Pritchard, 2,500 CFS Enaville and 4,200 CFS at Cataldo.  The water temps are between 46-50 degrees depending if you are upstream of down stream.  Hatches have been coming off in the morning and midday.  Salmon Flies are out, but not in large numbers.  Yellow Sallies, Golden Stones, PMD's and Brown Drakes are the dominate hatches right now.  BWO's are out in smaller number and can be hit or miss depending where you are.  There are also report of the caddis hatch starting.  The NF of the CDA stretches over 50+ miles from Enaville to its upper reaches.. If a section isn't producing move on.  Some areas will be more productive than others.  I like the sections above Pritchard.  It is less crowded and just plain prettier up there.  Fly Fishing is more than just catching fish.

Our weather has been improving but can still be a little Helter Skelter.  Today is cool temps between 48-58 degrees and possible thunder storms.  On Tuesday we hit 90 degrees.  With this cloud cover and a little cooler weather we could see some good baetis hatches.    The NF CDA is very fishable right now.  If you are in NW Montana and your usual river is in runoff it is definitely worth a trip over here to fish the NF of the CDA.  Bring your boat even!  If you are fishing stones just dress the top of the fly sparingly with floatant.  A half drowned stone are more attractive to the trout because they will still be there when the trout rise to take them.
